Growth is happening in the Ironbound neighborhood of Newark, New Jersey where AeroFarms, a leader in aeroponic farming, is making its mark. The company’s patented technology provides perfect conditions for healthy plants to thrive, taking indoor vertical farming to a new level of precision and productivity with minimal environmental impact. KSS is designing a multi-use campus for AeroFarms which will include the company’s flagship headquarters as well as space for farming, processing, and distribution.This ongoing project will be comprised of three buildings; Building 1 houses processing, shipping and receiving, and farm-related support areas, Building 2 contains growing and cooling space and a laboratory; and Building 3 will feature additional growing space, germination, event space, and corporate offices. 

At the project’s heart is a renovated pre-war warehouse frame, redeployed to serve as the harvest and packaging center. Playful supergraphics and thoughtful massing at street level transform the building into a welcoming, vibrant volume that celebrates Newark’s industrial heritage while acting as a harbinger of future growth. A generous culinary kitchen positioned as a hub for community gatherings and solar panel-covered parking doubling as a neighborhood space for farmers’ markets and other events are envisioned as a future phase. Strategically located to bring healthy, fresh food to a food-scarce neighborhood, AeroFarms is connecting members of the Newark community with access to nutritous food and education, in doing so helping to redefine the future of Newark.
