A Community to Serve Learners and Neighbors
KIPP Newark Collegiate Academy is a thriving KIPP New Jersey High School, bursting at its seams with a population of 540 students. To better accommodate this wealth of learners, KSS is working to build a new, larger Academy which will phase growth to accommodate the 1,000 high school students who will progress through the charter network in the coming years.
The new KIPP Newark Collegiate Academy is situated within the Littleton Avenue Redevelopment Area and is intended to provide community space for the neighborhood as well as the school. In addition to academic rooms, the 4-story building includes a gymnasium, café, and library—each available for use by the local community. An existing field will be upgraded with playing turf, preserving a sense of open space.
To engage the street, the building is set on a glass base. The translucent-paneled gym emanates light to saturate the area at night. During the day, an expanse of windows along the café affords exterior views while students enjoy high-top café seating indoors. The building’s upper floors are bent to break down the building’s scale. With energy recovery units on the roof and handsome street and landscaping below, the new school will work hard to be just as smart and savvy as its students.
