Multipurpose Annex Renovation
Great Oaks Legacy Charter Schools is a community-grown, community-based network of four campuses across Newark, devoted to preparing students for college success. Committed to the vitality of Newark’s neighborhoods in which its pre-K–12 schools operate, Great Oaks Legacy facilitates active investment in the region’s long-term success through numerous collaborative partnerships, outreach, and strategic growth initiatives.
As part of Great Oak Legacy Charter School’s continuing expansion in enrollment and as a neighborhood resource, KSS teamed with Civic Builders and Phelps Construction Group to holistically master plan the existing high school facilities at 17 Crawford Street. To best serve growing programs, the team sought to breathe new life and new purpose into an existing field house annex and introduce a canopy connecting the two buildings.
Adjacent to the high school, the revived annex serves as a home to a gymnasium for student athletics, performances, and multi-purpose events. The design preserved key elements of the existing structure while literally “lifting” the truss roof in a technically rigorous construction process. The cost-effective adaptation of the field house offers safe, flexible day-lit spaces that inspire play, wellness, discovery, and community.
