The urban renaissance of Newark, New Jersey, has been strengthened by Teachers Village and the creation of a learning community that bridges Newark’s downtown district with the university sector, home to Rutgers University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Increased pedestrian activity through mixed-use development, including a variety of schools, residential units targeted specifically for teachers, and retail opportunities were incorporated into this new model of community in order to bring new investment into the neighborhood.
Three charter schools, TEAM SPARK Academy, Discovery Charter School, and Great Oaks Charter School, in addition to an early childhood learning center are all integrated into this development. This infusion of K-12 opportunities provides quality educational options for young families living in the surrounding communities. Residential towers, such as Teachers Village Building 8 provide housing for the teachers working within this community. ”Live, Learn, and Work” is the motto for this learning community developed to enrich the urban fabric of Newark.
