Chen Daycare and Great Oaks Charter School
In the heart of Teachers Village, an innovative development in downtown Newark that highlights the role of education in mixed-use development, Building 5 epitomizes the breadth of spaces and brings invaluable services and opportunities to an area historically underserved. When complete, Teachers Village will enliven eight city blocks with multiple charter schools, daycare centers, retail, and housing options for the educational workforce.
The ground level of Building 5, a new five-story facility, features retail and a family health and planning clinic. Floors two and three are shared by Chen School, which incorporates an Abbott Daycare and a traditional daycare. A spacious cafeteria filled with natural light entering via a bay window and a full-service kitchen provides healthy food options for inner-city children.
Great Oaks Charter School occupies floors four and five. The school prepares students for college success through excellent teachers, low student-teacher ratios, and a rigorous daily tutoring program through a collaboration with New York University. Floor five includes a pavilion that accommodates large multipurpose group activity and tutoring space. Students can look out from a balcony to downtown activities or through floor-to-ceiling windows to Newark, Jersey City, New York, and beyond. Firehouse-style garage doors literally open the indoors to the outside.
